Akagera Activities & Itinerary

In Akagera National Park, you can do full day game drive from south to south for comprehensive wildlife viewing, and multiple boat trips at different times of day offer the best chance to see aquatic life.

  • Day 1: Arrival & Afternoon Boat Cruise. Arrive in Kigali and transfer to Akagera National Park (approx. 3hours drive). After lunch at your lodge, embark on an afternoon boat trip on Lake Ihema to see hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of water birds.
  • Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive. Spend the entire day on a game drive, exploring the park’s diverse landscapes from south to north, aiming to spot the Big Five, lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, buffaloes as well as giraffes, zebras, and various antelopes.
  • Day 3: Behind-the-Scenes Tour & Night Game Drive. Take a “Behind the Scenes” tour at the park headquarters to learn about conservation efforts, followed by a possible community cultural experience. In the evening, take a guided night game drive for chance to see nocturnal animals like civets, hyenas, and bush babies.
  • Day 4 & 5: Combine with Another National Park or Depart. For a richer Rwandan experience, consider transferring to Volcanoes National Park for gorilla/golden monkey trekking or Nyungwe Forest National Park for chimpanzee trekking and a canopy walk. If you prefer to stay in Akagera, you can add another activity like guided nature walks or sport fishing at Lake Shakani
