There are several activities you can enjoy at Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda in 2026. Lake Bunyonyi is one of the coolest places located in southwestern Uganda close to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park between two districts of Kisoro and Kabale. It is situated at 1,962 m above sea level about 25km long and 7km wide.

It is known to be the second deepest lake in Africa with a recorded depth of 144ft and 2952ft. It has 29 historical islands, with each island having its unique heritage attached to it. Lake Bunyonyi is also home to a variety of bird species making it one of the great places in Uganda to watch birds. Lake Bunyonyi has, for years, attracted many visitors because of its beauty, heritage, and the Local community leaving around it.

Lake Bunyonyi has 29 recorded Islands, each with unique history and heritage attached to it. Of these Main Islands include

  • Bushara Island,
  • Akampene Island, commonly known as the Punishment Island,
  • Kyahugye Island, Bwama, and Njuyeera (Sharp’s Island)
  •  Bucuranuka Island.

These islands have great history for example, the Punishment Island where in the past unmarried and young girls who got pregnant used to be seen as bringing shame to their families in parts surrounding the Lake and neighboring communities, so they were taken to a tiny island that is the Punishment Island and left to die. The lucky ones were rescued, and the unlucky died there mysteriously. Lake Bunyonyi is such a chilling and relaxation place, with cool breeze from the lake.

How to get to Lake Bunyonyi.

By road: You can access Lake Bunyonyi from Kampala/Entebbe by private or public transport, which is approximately 7-8 hours. We do organize transportation in our full package, where we organize for you a comfortable 4×4 vehicle with Ac and enough leg room and an experienced driver guide. Our trips normally start at 7:00am and you will have stops at the Equator and enroute Lunch in Mbarara then you proceed to Lake Bunyonyi for overnight. You can as well access Lake Bunyonyi from Kigali Rwanda which is approximately 4 hours’ drive through the Uganda Katuna Boarder.

By air: You can access Lake Bunyonyi by flight from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro airstrip, or from Kajjansi airstrip and Garuga airstrip to Kayonza airstrip from where you will be transferred to the hotel at Lake Bunyonyi for your relaxation..
