Flying safari to Bwindi to See Gorillas.
Are planning a safari to Uganda, we do have an option of a flying safari to Bwindi to see Gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park sits in the far southwestern corner of Uganda, tucked into the Albertine Rift Valley against the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the road from Kampala to Bwindi is a long one. By private vehicle, the journey takes between eight and ten hours depending on road conditions, the sector you are heading to, and the inevitable delays that characterize long-distance travel in East Africa. If you have limited time, those combining Uganda with Rwanda or Kenya on a many-country itinerary, or simply those who prefer to arrive at the forest rested and unhurried, flying to Bwindi is not just a convenience it is a genuinely transformative way to begin one of Africa’s greatest wildlife experiences.

Why Flying safari to Bwindi?
The light aircraft flight from Entebbe or Kajjansi to the airstrips serving Bwindi is itself a spectacular experience, carrying passengers over the rolling green hills of western Uganda, the glittering surface of Lake Victoria, and the dramatic escarpments of the Albertine Rift before descending into the intimate bush airstrips that serve the park. Watching the landscape unfold from a light aircraft experience gives you a geographical understanding of Uganda its size, its terrain, its extraordinary density of forest and farmland that the road journey, however beautiful in its own right, cannot fully provide.
Flying also preserves your energy for the trek itself. Gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi is physically demanding, and arriving at your lodge having spent eight hours on a long road journey is a suboptimal way to prepare for a morning that may require several hours of steep forest walking. Flying allows you to arrive in the afternoon, settle into your lodge, enjoy a relaxed dinner, and go to bed early with legs that are still fresh.
For honeymoon couples, families traveling with older members, and any traveler whose time in Uganda is limited to five or six days, the flight option fundamentally changes the shape and quality of the entire itinerary.
Airstrips Serving Bwindi.
There are three main airstrips that serve Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, each positioned to give access to a specific trekking sector. Understanding which airstrip corresponds to which sector is essential when booking, as landing at the wrong one can still mean a lengthy transfer by road.
Kihihi Airstrip serves the northern sectors of Bwindi primarily Buhoma and Ruhija. Kihihi is the most commonly used airstrip for Bwindi-bound travelers and handles the highest volume of charter and scheduled light aircraft flights. The transfer from Kihihi airstrip to Buhoma takes approximately one hour on a road that passes through some beautifully scenic countryside on the edge of the park.
Kisoro Airstrip serves the southern sectors of Bwindi Rushaga and Nkuringo as well as Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Kisoro is a small town set against the dramatic backdrop of the Virunga volcanoes, and the airstrip sits in an open valley with the volcanic cones of Muhavura, Gahinga, and Sabinyo rising on the horizon. The journey between Kisoro and Rushaga takes about one hour, while it is around ninety minutes to get to Nkuringo.
There is also Rwasa airstrip, which is small and not much used, but is meant for the Buhoma sector of Bwindi in place of Kihihi on some chartered flights.
Airlines and Flight Options.
Scheduled and charter light aircraft flights to the Bwindi airstrips operate primarily out of two departure points Entebbe International Airport and Kajjansi Airstrip, a smaller general aviation facility located approximately twenty kilometers from Kampala on the Entebbe Road.
Aerolink Uganda is the primary scheduled light aircraft operator serving Bwindi, operating regular flights on the Entebbe Kihihi and Entebbe Kisoro routes. Flight times are approximately one hour to one hour fifteen minutes depending on the route and weather conditions. Aerolink operates small planes called Cessna Caravans, which can accommodate about nine to twelve passengers, and the flights have a fixed departure schedule that is synchronized with the gorilla trekking period.
There are charter flights as well available from different aviation firms based in Kampala for the group or couple who would like to use their own plane without being confined to a fixed departure schedule. Charter options are naturally more expensive than scheduled services but offer the advantage of bespoke scheduling and the ability to combine many airstrips stops within a single itinerary for example, flying from Entebbe to Kihihi for Bwindi gorilla trekking, then continuing by charter to Kasese airstrip for Queen Elizabeth National Park, without returning to Kampala in between.
Practical Tips for Flying to Bwindi.
Luggage allowances on light aircraft are strictly enforced and significantly more restrictive than commercial airline limits. You will need a soft bag limit of 15 kilograms total per passenger, including hand luggage. Hard-sided suitcases are not accepted on light aircraft soft duffel bags or safari-style holdalls are essential. If you are arriving in Uganda on an international flight with larger luggage, most Entebbe hotels and lodges offer secure left-luggage storage, allowing you to fly to Bwindi with a lighter bag and collect the rest of your luggage on return.
Flights are weather dependent, and the mountain regions of southwestern Uganda can produce rapid weather changes, particularly during the rainy seasons of March to May and October to November. Delays and occasional rerouting do occur, and building a buffer of at least one extra day into your itinerary around gorilla trekking days is always wise, regardless of whether you are flying or driving.
Booking your flight with us well in advance ideally at the same time as your gorilla permit ensures availability on your preferred dates, particularly during peak season between June and September.
