Volcanoes National Park

 Popular for: Gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking and volcanic Mountain hikes. 

  • Activities: This is Rwanda’s most famous park, primarily known for mountain gorilla trekking. It is also one of the few places in Africa where you can track endangered golden monkeys. For hikers, it offers treks up several volcanoes within the Virunga Mountains, including Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke, which features a crater lake at its summit.
  • Other features: The Park is also home to the former research station and final resting place of Dian Fossey, the primatologist who dedicated her life to gorilla conservation.

Nyungwe National Park

Popular for: Chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walkway, Monkey trekking, Waterfall Hike and birdwatching. 

  • Activities: Nyungwe Forest protects one of Africa’s oldest montane rainforests and is a prime spot for chimpanzee tracking. It’s famous for its canopy walkway, a suspended bridge that offers a unique perspective of the forest from the treetops. The Park also has an extensive network of hiking trails and is a haven for birdwatchers with over 300 species.
  • Other features: The forest is a critical water catchment area for Rwanda.
  • Location: It is found in southwestern Rwanda, close to the border with Burundi and south of Lake Kivu. 

Akagera National Park

Popular for: Classic savanna safari and the Big Five Wildlife. 

  • Activities: This is Rwanda’s only savanna park, offering traditional game drives to see the Big Five—lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo. You can also do the Boat safaris on Lake Ihema provide opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds.
  • Other features: Akagera has seen a successful re-introduction of lions and black rhinos, making it a conservation success story. National Geographic listed it as a top destination for 2026.
  • Location: it is Located in eastern Rwanda, bordering Tanzania. 

Gishwati-Mukura National Park

New Park for: Community-based tourism and forest rehabilitation. 

  • Activities: As Rwanda’s newest national park, it was established to connect two forest fragments. Visitors can engage in chimpanzee and golden monkey tracking, nature walks, and experience community-led tourism that supports reforestation efforts.
  • Other features: It’s a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its ecological importance.
  • Location: Situated in north-western Rwanda, along the Congo-Nile Divide.
