Kidepo Valley National Park.

Kidepo Valley National Park is arguably Africa’s final frontier. Kidepo Valley National Park is located into the rugged, sun-drenched Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda, this park is a cinematic masterpiece of vast golden savannahs, craggy mountain ranges, and a raw sense of isolation that you won’t find in more crowded East African circuits. Whether you are an experienced safari adventurer or a beginner, Kidepo will provide you with a very spiritual link to the wilderness.  The following information should help you plan your trip to this Ugandan treasure.

Attractions in Kidepo Valley National Park.

Narus Valley.

Narus Valley is the unquestionable center of wildlife activity at Kidepo. The valley attracts animals because it is home to the only perennial rivers within the park. The valley provides the perfect location to view the force of nature with herds of the big five mammals including rhinos, leopards, lions, buffaloes, and elephants can be spotted moving across the savannahs as one organism. The flatlands and the rolling landscape provide a perfect place from which to see the lions that rest on the rocky outcrops looking at the elephant herds, Rothschild giraffes, and the herds of zebras grazing on the grasslands.

Kidepo Valley and the White Sand River.

Unlike the verdant Narus, the Kidepo Valley further up north is a mystical and relatively dry area. The Kidepo River is a “sand river,” flowing seasonally and remaining dry most of the time, with the 50-meter-wide riverbed covered in glistening white sand with Borassus palm on its edges. A walk along the riverbed can be described as a fascinating journey into antiquity. It is in this part of the park where one can encounter unique animals of the dry savanna like the cheetah and the ostrich.

Kanangorok Hot Springs.

These hot springs, are located in close proximity to the South Sudan border, form a remarkable geothermal site that can be admired against the breathtaking scenery of the Lotuke Mountains. Getting to the hot springs requires a trip along the most beautiful routes within the park; you will get glimpses of the great wilderness that lies on its borders. At this point of the itinerary, you will have the chance to observe how the volcanic activity formed the Rift Valley ecosystem.

Activities to do in Kidepo Valley National Park.

Game Drives.

The classic approach to experiencing Kidepo National Park is through game drives that take you deep into the Narus and Kidepo valley regions. With fewer than 10 safari vehicles usually in the park at any given time, you often feel as though you have the entire 1,442 square kilometers to yourself. Professional ranger guides help track the park’s famous predators, including the maneless lions and leopards, while providing deep insights into the behavior of the park’s 86 mammal species. see Popular trip

Cultural Interaction with the Karamojong and Ik.

A Uganda trip to Kidepo involves interaction with both wildlife and humans. The Karamajong are traditional nomads with cattle at the heart of their existence; living in their fortified homes called “manyattas”. By visiting a manyatta, one gains insight into a unique cultural group that has steadfastly refused to be modernized. For those who wish to venture further into cultural exploration, an adventure into the Morungole Mountains to visit the Ik, one of the smallest and most secluded tribes of Africa, is a rare chance to experience a culture that has been unaltered for many years.

Bird watching.

Kidepo is a dream safari destination for birdwatchers, with a bird list numbering over 475. The park’s dry landscape draws in some unique bird species not seen anywhere else in the nation. Have your binoculars handy as you try to spot the elusive Karamoja Apalis, secretary birds, and Abyssinian ground hornbills. One of the defining moments in Kidepo is watching an ostrich race through the savannah at dusk.

Best time to visit Kidepo Valley National Park.

The best time to visit Kidepo Valley National Park is during the dry season, which runs from September to March. During this period, the vegetation cover is minimal, thus resulting in animal migration to the perennial water sources in the Narus Valley. As such, one is assured of regular sightings during this period. The weather will be hot with maximum temperatures of 34°C, although the high levels of clarity in the air make this a great time to take photographs. On the other hand, the Wet Season, which extends from April to August, brings in a whole new look in terms of beauty, with the park becoming an emerald paradise.

How to get to Kidepo Valley National Park.

By Air (The Most Convenient Way): Due to its distance, the best way to get to Kidepo National Park is by air travel. Flights can start directly from either Entebbe or Kajjansi Airports to Lomej Airstrip near the park. This journey will take about 1.5 to 2 hours, during which you can enjoy an aerial view of the Nile and the Ugandan landscape.

By Road (The Most Adventurous Option).

If you’re ready for adventure, this journey by road that takes between 10 and 12 hours to get there from Kampala is worth trying. The main route is the one via Gulu and Kitgum, which gives you a chance to explore the beautiful landscapes of the Acholi and Karamoja areas. A 4×4 car will be very necessary because the final roads may be tough to pass, particularly if it rains.

Where to Stay in Kidepo Valley National Park.

Despite its location, Kidepo has accommodations that range from luxurious to camping facilities. If you want luxury, there is the Apoka Safari Lodge that has room units constructed using rocks and set within the rocks. There are also water pools in the rocks where one gets to see the thirsty elephants around the area. The next option would be the Kidepo Savannah Lodge, Zebra safari lodge, Mara Kidepo lodge and Adere Safari Lodge that have safari tents as well as cottages with verandas to look at the savannah landscape. The budget lodge in the area is the UWA Bandas at Apoka.
