Masai Mara National Reserve.

Masai Mara National Reserve.

On a Kenya safari, Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the landmarks on an international level and allows one to indulge in an exceptional safari tour. Masai Mara Wildlife Reserve offers vast grasslands and acacia trees to its fullest, making it the perfect destination for an African safari experience. However, what makes Masai Mara Wildlife Reserve a truly special place to visit is its location as part of the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem.

Attractions in Masai Mara National Reserve.

Great Wildebeest Migration.

Known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” Great Migration is the main attraction in Mara. During the period between July and October, more than 1.5 million wildebeests move together with thousands of zebras and gazelles to seek pastures. What makes the spectacle even more fascinating is when the herd passes through the Mara River. The challenge for them is the crocodiles and steep banks in their way to the river’s other side.

Big Five and the “Big Cats”

Masai Mara is among the few African safari destinations where the presence of the Big Five lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino is almost assured in a single visit. But it is the nickname “Kingdom of Lions” that distinguishes the area from others. Indeed, the park’s wildlife population consists of a high concentration of apex predators, making it common for visitors to observe lions hunting down their prey and cheetahs sprinting at breakneck speed in the grassy plains. The Masai Mara is the real-life setting of the well-known “Big Cat Diary” series.

Mara River and its Giant Residents.

Cutting through the heart of the reserve, Mara River is a important artery for the ecosystem. The shores of this river are filled with enormous Nile crocodiles and huge herds of hippos, which spend most of their time submerged in the cool water of the river. Apart from being a migratory point for the animals crossing over, the river is also a good place for bird watching since various species of birds flock here to eat and drink.

Activities to do in Masai Mara National Reserve.

Game Drives.

The most popular way to explore the Mara is through expert-led game drives. Either in the early morning rays or during the golden afternoon, you will explore this park extensively, going into it in search of the Big Five. The experienced guides will utilize their extensive knowledge on the behaviors of animals to spot the shy leopards and the rare black rhinos. Because Mara is largely open savanna, the visibility is exceptional, allowing for sweeping views and incredible photography opportunities of predators and prey alike.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris.

As for a rare vantage point, there’s nothing quite like the sunrise hot air balloon safari in the Mara. Drifting through the sky as the sun rises over the savannah, you have the opportunity to gaze down at the countless animals of the migration, or even observe lions hunting early in the morning. After your journey in the sky, your safari concludes with the classic “Champagne Bush Breakfast,” in the midst of the wild African bush.

Encounters with the Maasai Culture.

One cannot miss the Maasai people in their own ancestral lands in the Mara. A visit to a nearby Manyatta will enable one to explore the culture, traditions, beaded crafts, and the unique lifestyle that the Maasai have maintained alongside nature for generations. There is the opportunity to experience the legendary “Adumu” jumping dance and traditional medicine practices as well.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Masai Mara National Reserve.

The best time to visit is during the peak season between July and October for anyone who wishes to experience the great migration and see the river crossings. During this time, there is little or no rain, and the weather is cool. Animals congregate around waterholes, making game drives quite enjoyable.

Now is the best period for watching birds because they come migrating from Europe and North Africa, and for seeing the calving period (in January and February) because numerous calves are born, thereby attracting lots of predators.

How to get to Masai Mara National Reserve.

Travelling to the Masai Mara will not be an issue with two choices available.

By Air: The easiest means of transport is by flying to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Flights depart from Wilson Airport in Nairobi and take about 45 to 60 minutes. The domestic flights land in the airstrips located in the reserve like Keekorok, Musiara, or Ol Kiombo based on where your lodge is situated.

By Road: If you like a road trip adventure, the road journey will take around 5 to 6 hours to reach the destination. You will travel through the famous Great Rift Valley, the vibrant Narok Town, and finally enter the reserve. While the roads are mainly paved, you require a tough 4×4 safari car for the last part of the trip.
