What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda.

When you have booked your gorilla trip to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. You have sorted the flights, arranged the accommodation, and mentally prepared yourself for what is widely described as one of the greatest wildlife experiences on earth. Now comes the part that trips up more first-time trekkers than you might expect figuring out exactly what to pack.

The forest does not forgive poor preparation. The terrain is steep, the vegetation is thick, and the weather in the Virunga Mountains can shift from warm sunshine to cold drizzle within a single hour. Pack right and the whole experience feels effortless. Pack wrong and you will spend your one precious hour with the gorillas shivering in a wet cotton t-shirt wishing you had read this article sooner.

Clothing: This Is Where It Really Matters.

The single most important part of your packing list is what you wear into the forest, and the decisions you make here will determine how comfortable and enjoyable your trek is from start to finish.

Start with a long-sleeved shirt in a neutral, earthy colour olive green, khaki, brown, or dark grey all work well. Bright colors and white are best avoided as they can startle wildlife and attract insects. The long sleeves are not optional. The forest is full of stinging nettles, thorny undergrowth, and biting insects, and bare skin will regret every one of them. On top of the long-sleeved shirt, bring a light fleece or softshell jacket. The Virunga Mountains sit at elevations between 2,400 and 4,500 metres, and even if the morning starts warm, the temperature drops noticeably once you are deep inside the forest.

For your lower half, wear long trousers rather than shorts, again in a neutral colour and ideally in a material that dries quickly if it gets wet. Tuck your trouser legs into your socks before you start walking it sounds fussy but it is one of the best defenses against safari ants, which are remarkably determined and will find every gap in your clothing if you give them the opportunity.

Footwear: Do Not Cut Corners Here.

Your choice of footwear is arguably the most important single decision on this entire packing list. Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support are essential. The trails in Volcanoes National Park can be steep, slippery with mud, and uneven underfoot, and a twisted ankle in the middle of the forest on the day of your trek is a very miserable outcome for a very expensive permit. Make sure your boots are properly broken in before you travel. New boots that have not been worn before will give you blisters before you reach the gorillas. Pack two pairs of thick hiking socks and wear the heaviest pair on the day of the trek.

The Essentials to Carry in Your Daypack.

Keep your daypack light but complete. You will be hiking through dense forest for potentially several hours, and a heavy pack will wear you down faster than you expect. Here is what to bring:

At least two litres of water, ideally in a reusable bottle or hydration bladder

High-energy snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, energy bars, or chocolate

A lightweight waterproof rain poncho or packable rain jacket

Insect repellent, preferably one containing DEET

Sunscreen for exposed skin before you enter the shade of the forest

A small first aid kit including blister plasters and any personal medication

Your gorilla trekking permit and a valid photo ID

Camera Gear ;Keep It Practical.

You will absolutely want to photograph the gorillas, and the good news is that photography is permitted during the one-hour visit. That said, keep your camera setup practical rather than elaborate. A mirrorless camera or a good quality smartphone will handle the low light conditions of the forest perfectly well. Flash photography is strictly prohibited as it can distress the gorillas, so a camera that performs well in low light is a genuine advantage. If you are bringing a larger camera, carry it around your neck or in an easily accessible front pocket of your pack rather than buried at the bottom where you will miss the shot of a lifetime fumbling to find it.

What to Leave Behind.

Knowing what not to bring is just as important as knowing what to pack. Leave food that has a strong smell in your lodge, as the gorillas are attracted to human food and rangers prefer to avoid any situation where the animals associate people with feeding. Avoid wearing perfume, strong cologne, or heavily scented sunscreen on the day of the trek, as strong smells can disturb the gorillas and affect the quality of the experience for everyone in your group. Bright or noisy jewelry is unnecessary and best left at the hotel

One Final Thing Worth Knowing.

Rwanda requires every trekker to hire a porter at the park gate, and while this is sometimes presented as optional it is genuinely one of the best decisions you will make on the day. Porters carry your bag, steady you on difficult sections of the trail, and have an intimate knowledge of the terrain that makes the whole trek smoother and safer. They are also local community members whose livelihoods are directly supported by gorilla tourism, which means hiring a porter is a small but meaningful act of responsible travel as well as a very practical one.

Pack well, arrive early, go in with an open heart, and the mountain gorillas of Rwanda will give you a morning you will never forget for as long as you live.
