Amboseli National Park.

Amboseli National Park

Plan your safari to Amboseli National Park, where you can witness a magical place, experience the mightiness of the wild nature and witness the majestic beauty of the tallest mountain in Africa. Amboseli National Park is the wonderful safari site in Kenya, which is situated in the southern part of the country. Nicknamed the “Home of the African Elephant,” this unique park has a picturesque landscape that cannot be found anywhere else in Africa. The iconic scene of a herd of majestic elephants with impressive tusks standing against the snow-covered peak of Kilimanjaro is considered a symbol of African safaris. This picturesque landscape occupies an area of 392 square kilometers, with barren lake beds, green swamps, and savanna.

Attractions/things to see in Amboseli National Park.

Views of Kilimanjaro.

Even though the mountain lies beyond the national borders, within Tanzania’s territory, the most amazing vistas of Mount Kilimanjaro are found in Amboseli. Rising from the plains, the mountain serves as a majestic landmark against which the park’s wildlife moves about. The presence of tropical grasslands and ice on the peak makes a picturesque background for any photo taken at the site. The best times for watching the peak are mornings and afternoons when the sky clears off the clouds that obscure it.

Great Tuskers of elephants.

Amboseli is world-famous for the free-roaming populations of African elephants in the park, including some of the few remaining “Great Tuskers” anywhere on Earth. While finding elephants can be challenging at many other parks, Amboseli’s flat terrain and year-round swamps make encounters practically certain. The herds have been observed for many years by the Amboseli Trust for Elephants, which means they may be the most acclimated elephants in all of Africa. Seeing a group of more than fifty elephants peacefully traversing the swamplands carries a deep significance.

Lush Enkongo Narok and Ol Tukai Swamps.

Whereas the surrounding environment could otherwise be dry and arid, these swamps are nature’s oases in the middle of the park. Formed by underground streams resulting from the thawing snow on Mount Kilimanjaro, these wetlands are very lively places. They are where you will find the main congregations of hippos, buffalos, and many other birds. The greenery of the swamps against the golden plains is very colorful, ensuring good wildlife sightings at all times.

Activities/Things to do in Amboseli National Park.

Panoramic views from Observation Hill.

In order to have a proper idea about the enormity of the national park, a visit to Observation Hill, also known as Nomatior, is mandatory. Observation Hill is one of those rare locations in Amboseli where it is allowed to get out of the car and explore on foot, offering a complete panoramic view as it is a conical volcano hill. On top of this, one gets a wonderful view of the Enkongo Narok swamp which hosts large numbers of elephants and buffaloes swimming in its waters.

Maasai Cultural Encounters.

Human civilization within Amboseli National Park cannot be separated from the existence of the Maasai tribe, who have existed peacefully alongside this fauna for ages. Various safaris provide opportunities for visitors to interact with the Maasai at their manyattas, which are villages located outside the national park. This gives you the opportunity to experience the nomadic culture of the Maasai, watch exciting traditional dancing, and see the amazing bead work.

Game Drives and Birdwatching.

Amboseli’s game drives are anything but ordinary, aside from the elephants, the park boasts lions, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, and giraffes. The open landscape provides a fantastic experience in hunting down these predators. In addition, for those interested in birds, Amboseli offers an exceptional habitat with more than 400 species of birds. These include the magnificent African Fish Eagle, the colorful Malachite Kingfisher, and the flamingoes that visit Lake Amboseli during the rainy season.

Best time to visit Amboseli, Kenya.

The two dry seasons, which from June to October and January to March, are generally accepted as the ideal periods to tour Amboseli National Park. The few plants during this period result in animals concentrating in the permanent swamps, ensuring that sighting wild animals is relatively simple. The two wet seasons make the park greener and more picturesque. While the animals may disperse, this is the best time for bird watching as migratory species arrive. The dust is washed away by the rains, leaving the air crisp and clear, which often results in the most spectacular, cloud-free views of Mount Kilimanjaro for photography.

Where to Stay in Amboseli National Park.

Amboseli has a wide variety of accommodation facilities, each perfectly merging into the setting:

Luxury Lodges: Tortilis Camp, Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge and Tawi Lodge provide an exclusive stay, usually within their own conservation areas where night game viewing and guided walks through the wilderness are possible, as opposed to the main park.

Mid-Range Lodges: Ol Tukai Lodge, Kibo Safari Camp provide an ideal choice for lodging right inside the park, offering breathtaking views of the swamp areas where elephants can be seen in plenty.

Budget Lodges: AA Amboseli Lodge and Sentrim Amboseli allow travelers to explore nature in tents and still avail of all the amenities.

How to get to Amboseli?

Amboseli is one of the most easily reached parks in Kenya, being situated at an approximate distance of 240 kilometers from Nairobi.

By Road: It takes three and a half to four hours by safari vehicle from Nairobi along the Nairobi-Arusha highway. Usually, people prefer to enter the park from the Namanga gate or Emali. You will use a 4×4 vehicle while moving around or inside the park, especially during the rainy season when the volcanic soil tends to be wet.

By Air: if you want convenience, daily flights are available from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Amboseli Airstrip that take around 40 minutes to reach the destination point while flying past the beautiful sights of the Great Rift Valley and Mount Kilimanjaro.
