Semuliki National Park.

Semuliki National Park is found in the distant Bundibugyo District and is one of the most mysterious wilds in Uganda. The size of the park is 219 km2 and it is the furthest point east of the massive Ituri Forest in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This makes it the only tropical rain forest in East Africa, giving it a unique appearance compared to the usual savannah grassland found in the area. For tourists on the lookout for something out of the ordinary and exciting, Semuliki National Park is definitely is home to the rainforests that blend in with the sparkling water bodies of the Albertine Rift to create a habitat that has species unique to Central Africa only.

Attractions in Semuliki National Park

Sempaya Hot Springs: This is arguably the most renowned feature of the entire park. There are actually two separate hot springs, referred to as the “male” spring named Bintente, which is located in a swamp forest area, and the “female” spring, Nyasimbi, a boiling spring that shoots out a steam plume visible from miles around. It has a temperature of an astounding 103 degrees centigrade, where one can even cook eggs or bananas within ten minutes.

Semliki River: The meandering Semliki River runs adjacent to the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, forming an important lifeline for the fauna inhabiting the national park. It traverses through a forest region, where its dark waters are home to enormous Nile crocodiles and schools of hippos. The banks of this river offer a perfect viewing point for viewing rare species of aquatic birds.

Primates and Birding Haven: Being a part of the Congo Basin, Semuliki is a home of species that are not often encountered in East Africa. The park is home to more than 440 birds, including 35 birds of Guinea-Congo forest biome endemics such as Lyre-tailed Honeyguide and different types of Hornbills. Besides, there are a lot of primates found in the park, such as chimpanzees, Central African Red Colobus monkeys, and De Brazza’s monkey.

Batwa Pygmy Community: Batwa stay on the edge of the forest lives a tribe of hunters and gatherers known as the Basua (also called Batwa) pygmies. For thousands of years, the Basua have lived in the Ituri forest, and their fascinating culture, their expertise in using medicines from plants found in the forest, and their traditional practices of fire making can shed light on their lives.

Activities to do in Semuliki National Park.

Sempaya Nature Walks and Hikes: There is no other better way of feeling close to nature than taking walks in the forest. Kirumia Trail is one such walk that measures about 13 kilometers and leads right to the Semliki River. For those seeking primates, the Red Monkey Track offers a chance to spot the rare De Brazza’s monkey. These walks are taken through an umbrella of trees, more than 300 years old, covered in strangler fig trees and exotic vines.

Wildlife Game Drives: The vegetation here clears out into the golden plains of a savanna in the Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve. Visitors have an opportunity for morning or evening game drives to view Forest Elephants, Buffaloes, Uganda Kob, and Warthogs. The evening game drives are quite exciting as they give one an opportunity to observe nocturnal wildlife such as Leopards, White-tailed Mongooses, and Nightjars.

Chimpanzee Tracking: Although Kibale National Park is renowned for its chimpanzees, tracking chimpanzees in Semuliki presents a more rugged experience. This is where the chimpanzees are being studied for habituation, and finding them in the dense forest instills a sense of exploration. Observing our closest relatives in their natural environment in Central Africa is a learning experience.

Cultural Trail and Village visits: Indeed, tourists get much enriched by interacting with locals. Tourists get to engage in cultural dances, listen to cultural tales, and watch how they blend with modernity without abandoning their forest background through the visitation of the Ntandi Batwa Village.

Best Time to Visit Semuliki National Park.

The best period for one to go on a safari in the park is the dry periods which occur between December and February and between June and September. This is due to the reason that in this period, the land becomes solid and easy to move around, while also making it easier to find the animals near rivers or other water bodies. However, for those who want to go bird watching, it might be ideal to go in the wet periods.
