As the gorillas take center stage, this national park is home to some of the rarest Golden Monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti), which are found on very few occasions elsewhere in the world. Activities to do in Volcanoes National Park.

Gorilla Trekking.

Gorilla trekking safari experience is planned meticulously in order to ensure the safety of the apes. Groups of only eight people can be allowed to interact with a particular gorilla family on any particular day. The whole process takes anywhere between 30 minutes to four hours depending on where the gorillas move about. Once located, an hour is allowed for interaction with the gorillas, which should be done while keeping at least seven meters away from them.

Mount Bisoke Crater Lake Trail Hike.

If you are looking for an adventure that combines both physical exercise and stunning sights. Then a visit to Mount Bisoke is a must-do. You will be walking through different kinds of vegetation, including bamboo forest and Hagenia-Hypericum woodland, until you reach the summit where there is a beautiful crater lake that is about 400 meters wide. Even though climbing up might prove challenging because the ground could get very muddy at some point, the sight of the entire Virunga chain is worth the effort.

Immersing in Culture at Gorilla Guardians Village.

The village was established by the community and consists of former poachers, who have since devoted themselves to saving their endangered gorillas. Best time for visiting Volcanoes National Park.

Though Volcanoes National Park is open throughout all year round, the dry season, which occurs from June to September and mid-December to February, is usually regarded as the best season for hiking. The season is characterized by dry weather that favors photography and non-slippery trails, with the day temperatures varying from 25°C to 27°C

But then there are also the wet seasons, March-May and October-November, each with its own special appeal. The surroundings are incredibly lush and green, with gorillas remaining closer to the lower regions where food is plentiful, thus making your journey shorter. Furthermore, there are also some top-end lodges that will have reduced rates for you in what they call the “low season.”

How to get to Volcanoes National Park.

By Road: From Kigali city the park is located about 105 km while using road transport. The journey will take around 2 to 3 hours on a well-laid tarmac road passing through the famed “land of a thousand hills.” It is advised to use a 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced guide.

By air: For those who are pressed for time or would like a bird’s eye view of the volcanoes, helicopter transport is also possible between Kigali International Airport and Musanze in as little as 25-30 minutes.
